Dating a girl you met online isn’t drastically different to dating a girl after you got her number in a coffee shop or having met through a friend. But there are a few pitfalls to beware of and things to consider. Firstly, I’d like to say what is the same about online dating: you should be cool, well dressed, interesting and have the date planned doing something great. Now for some specific online dating tips:

1. Don’t mention the internet. Stay away from talking about how you met. There is still a reasonable amount of stigma attached to online dating so it is preferable to not talk about the subject. If you can have a fun and interesting the date, how you met should blend into the background.
2. Prepare. Having said that, it is still essential to have a very credible stock answer ready for why you have been doing internet dating. Something along the lines of: you are very busy with your job and don’t have time to go out and meet people. Even better: the sort of girls you find yourself meeting on nights out are not really your type of girl.
3. Nail the first five minutes. Meeting the girl for the first time can be an awkward moment, so there are two things to remember. To put her at ease, greet her warmly in the way you would someone you know well but don’t be over familiar by holding hands or being too physical in any way. It is important to have a story or anecdote lined up, because it will put her at ease if you take the conversational strain early on.
4. Make her comfortable. It seems like an obvious point, but your date should be somewhere that the girl will feel comfortable meeting. Personally I liked to meet at Topman outside Oxford Circus tube. Certainly not the most ambient of locations, but at least it didn’t set any safety alarm bells ringing.
